Shanghai Grilled Tofu

2 tbsps vegetable oil
3 tbsps lite soy sauce
2 tbsps plus 2 tsps wine vinegar
2/3 cup water
2 tsps dried oregano
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/8 tsp pepper
2 tsps sugar
1 lb firm tofu, sliced 1/2-inch thick

  • In a shallow bowl or baking pan, combine all ingredients, except tofu. Mix well. Add tofu, cover and marinate in the refrigerator 4 to 5 hours. Turn tofu slices several times while marinating.

  • Preheat broiler. Lightly oil a shallow baking pan or spray with a nonstick cooking spray.

  • Remove tofu slices from marinade and place on prepared pan in a single layer. Broil, turning several times, until desired crispness is reached. (Tofu can also be grilled on a barbecue grill.)

  • While tofu is cooking, heat marinade in a small saucepan. Serve with tofu (and rice is a nice companion).
