{Inside Address}

Dear Leigh-Anne:

Thank you for writing me regarding animal protection. I appreciate hearing the questions and concerns of students like you. [Recipient's note: Say what?] Communicating with people from Ohio is one of the most important parts of my job, so I am grateful when students like you take the time to write.

There are presently a number of bills regarding animal protection. The Downed Animal Protection Act (S. 515) would prohibit inhumane treatment of animals in stockyards. I have also co-sponsored a bill that would prohibit the transfer of birds across state lines for hte purpose of cockfighting. The Bear Protection act (S. 1109) would prohibit the sale of any products containing bear entrails and therefore discourage teh hunting and killing of bears. I have also written legislation (S. 1495) that is designed to decrease and may ultimately lead to the end of the use of animals in testing cosmetics, shampoos, detergents, and other products.

As you can see, there are a number of initiatives in Congress to protect animals. Currently all of these bills are being reviewed by different subcommittees, and none have come before the full Senate. When they do, I will certainly keep your views in mind.

Again, thank you for writing. Hearing from those who I represent is a vital part of the legislative process, and I am especially glad to hear from students. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions or comments you may have in the future.

Very respectfully yours,

Signed: Mike

I am assuming that this response from Mike DeWine is in response to my letter regarding the deaths of the chimps at The Coulston Foundation (?)
