Dear Leigh-Anne:

Thank you for your letter regarding chimpanzee sanctuaries. I appreciate hearing from you on this matter.

On November 22, 1999, Representative James C. Greenwood (R-PA-8) introduced H.R. 3514, a bill to amend the Public Service Health Act to provide for a system of sanctuaries for chimpanzees that have been designated as being no longer needed in research conducted or supported by the Public Health Service. H.R. 3514 has been referred to the House Committee on Commerce for further consideration.

Currently, there is no legislation before the Senate regarding retired chimpanzee sanctuaries. However, should legislation be introduced, I will be sure to keep your views in mind.

Thank you for contacting me. Please feel free to contact me again about this or any other issue that concerns you.

Very respectfully yours,

Signed: George V. Voinovich
