Dear Ms. Dennison:

Thank you for contacting me about H.R. 2929, the Captive Elephant Accident Prevention Act. I appreciate having the opportunity to respond to your concerns.

H.R. 2929 would prohibit the interstate transport of elephants in traveling shows and circuses. As you know, evidence shows that elephants often suffer abuse in the circus industry. Furthermore, this bill addresses the safety hazards posed to the general public when they attend events featuring live elephants. Since the early 1980s, nearly 30 people have been killed by elephants who broke free from their handlers and restraints. I am pleased to inform you that I am a cosponsor of this bill.

I will monitor the bill's progress and continue to work with my colleagues in Congress to promote responsible actions which prevent animal cruelty.

Thank you again for contacting me. Your views are important to me so please keep in touch about issues that are important to you.

Sincerely,

Signed: Dennis J. Kucinich
